Pixie Hat

Yarn: 2 skeins Moda Dea
Sassy Stripes
Gauge: 6 st./in.
Needles: as needed to get gauge. I knit very loosely,
so I used a size 1, but YMMV.
Tip-up knitting directions*:
Cast on 8 st.; knit.
Divide onto 4 dpns; join.
Knit 4 rows (in the round).
Increase 1 stitch at the end of every needle, every third round, until
# of stitches equals the circumference of the head it needs to fit
(__ st./in. x __ inches = __ total stitches). In this case,
the total # of st. =
Knit for another 5"; bind off and weave in the end.
Make a tassel; fasten to point of hat.
Brim-down knitting directions:
Cast on # of stitches to fit head. (__ st./in. x __ inches = __
total stitches).
Knit even for 4-5".
Decrease 1 stitch at the end of every needle every third round until
there are 8 st. left.
Break yarn; bind off (thread end of yarn through remaining stitches
and tie off).
Make tassel and attach to end of
hat.
*Tip-up knitting -- starting off
at the tip can be fiddly because there are so few stitches to knit,
but it has the advantage that you don't need to do a gauge swatch
-- you can just knit until you have enough stitches to measure your
gauge, then figure out how many more stitches you need to get the
correct circumference.
